West Nile Vaccine Information

There is a west nile vaccine for horses. It is an intramuscular injection.

This vaccine is a killed vaccine. Therefore, it WILL NOT give the virus to your horse.

To maintain the optimum level of immunity, a second dose should be given about 3-4 weeks after the first dose.  The duration of protection is approximately            6 months in length.

How early (at what age) can it be given ?

It may be given at the same time you normally start vaccinating your foals.

Is it safe for pregnant animals ?

Yes.

Can it be given by the owner ?

Yes, it is now approved for administration by the horse owner.
